I grew up with animals, primarily dogs and horses. As a child, when I began to draw, I naturally drew them as part of my surroundings. Our pets are truly part of our families. Treat them with love and kindness and they return love and loyalty.  A very simple equation!

After receiving a BFA from Skidmore College, then an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, I first worked in graphic design. From there I pursued illustration, always trying to be true to my artistic soul. Then I began to teach, finding I really enjoyed working with people of all ages, hearing their personal stories and helping them realize their creative potential. Currently, I spend my time painting dog portraits and landscapes, and teaching painting and drawing both privately and at educational institutions.

But back to animals.  Throughout my journey, I have created portraits of animals and people. I enjoy capturing my subjects' spirit and inner qualities. Eventually, I focused on painting dogs – knowing that my own love of dogs is shared by all who consider them part of their family.

I support philanthropic endeavors and donate a portion of my proceeds to Angel Animal Hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA. I regularly donate a personalized animal portrait experience to local charities. In past years I have donated to: Love Lane Special Needs Horse Back Riding Program, Lincoln, MA, A Better Chance, Wellesley, MA, Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA, Friends of Boston Homeless, Boston, MA, Hunnewell School Auction, Wellesley, MA, Epiphany School, Dorchester, MA and Cambridge Historical Society, Cambridge, MA.  If you are interested in a portrait donation from Dog Portraits by Katherine, please contact me.
