Boston pet portrait artist Katherine Miller and her dog Lola

I grew up with animals, primarily dogs and horses. Since I was around animals as a child, I naturally drew them as part of my surroundings, and I still do.   I truly believe that people are like animals. Treat them with love and kindness and they in turn will love and be kind to you.  A very simple equation!

After an art degree from Skidmore College, then an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, I worked in graphic design, decided that wasn't for me.  I struggled as an artist and pursued illustration, always trying to be true to my  artistic soul. Then I began to teach, finding I really enjoyed working with people of all ages. hearing their personal stories, and helping them realize their creative potential.

But back to animals.  Throughout my journey, I created portraits of animals and people for family and friends.  Everyone always commented on how I captured my subjects' spirit and inner qualities.  It turned out I was especially good at painting dogs, which I give over to the fact that, having grown up with dogs, primarily labs, I consider them part of my family.

Currently, I divide my time between painting dogs of course! -as well as landscapes and teaching painting and drawing in various educational institutions and privately.

I believe in philanthropic endeavors and donate a portion of my proceeds to Angel Animal Hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA.  I also pick various charities to donate a personalized animal portrait experience to.  In the past years, I have donated to: Love Lane Special Needs Horse Back Riding Program, Lincoln, MA,  A Better Chance, Wellesley, MA, Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA, Friends of Boston Homeless, Boston, MA, Hunnwell School Auction, Wellesley, MA, Epiphany School, Dorchester, MA and Cambridge Historical Society, Cambridge, MA.  If you are interested in a portrait donation from Dog Portraits by Katherine, please contact me.
